Suspected Fuel Thieves Nabbed in Memphis
An off-duty officer made a chance spotting of a suspect vehicle in Memphis on Sunday resulting in a pair of arrests in a long-standing fuel theft investigation.
Police Chief Bill Holland indicated that officer Jason Ketchum identified the vehicle in the Casey's parking lot when he drove by in his personal vehicle. He maintained contact with the suspects and notified the on-duty officer, resulting in a traffic stop on a maroon 1994 Saturn four-door car.
The vehicle's driver, Christopher S. Spurgeon, 22, of Keosauqua, IA, was arrested for theft of motor fuel. Additional charges are pending.
The officers indicated that no fuel was stolen from Casey's when the vehicle was spotted, but that Spurgeon was suspected of numerous drive offs from both Gas & More and Casey's in Memphis.
During one of those thefts at Gas & More, witnesses identified distinguishing traits on the vehicle, which helped officers identify it and make the arrest.
Also arrested was a passenger in the car, Michelle D. Arzola, 22, of Keosauqua, IA. She was taken into custody on a warrant for failure to appear.
Officers indicated that both suspects currently reside in Edina.
