Memphis Legion Team Starts Season Off With a Bang

The Memphis American Legion Post #219 baseball team kicked off the season with two wins in a double header at Hannibal on Friday.
In the first game, the Memphis team pounded out 13 runs on 14 hits to top Hannibal 13-7 in a thrilling 8-inning game. In the second contest of the night, Memphis won again, 9-5.
In the first contest, Sabe Sears got things started off right with a triple to lead off the game. Two batters later, Harley Stone knocked in the first run of the contest with a sacrifice hit to bring in Sears. In the bottom of the inning, Stone struck out all three Hannibal batters to keep things at 1-0.
After RBIs by Brock Bondurant, Harley Stone, and Ben Shannan for Memphis in the top of the inning, Hannibal finally got on the board in the third to bring the score to 4-2. In the fourth inning, Memphis went down one, two, three while Hannibal tied things up with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
In The fifth inning Memphis jumped back on top, scoring three runs with two outs capped off by a two RBI single off the bat of Drew Miller. In the sixth, Hannibal again tied the game up 7-7.
The seventh inning saw neither team score sending the game into extra innings. Memphis quickly put the game out of reach, exploding for six runs in the eighth behind RBIs from Sears, Dakota Wells, Cordie Kigar, and two from Ben Shannan.
Harley Stone finished the game getting a pop up for a complete game win.
Stone struck out 7 hitters while surrendering 7 runs on 5 hits, 4 walks, and one hit batsmen. Ben Shannan led Memphis in hitting, going 3-5 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Stone and Miller added 2 RBIs each, while Bondurant scored 3 runs in the win.
In the second game of the double header, Hannibal held Memphis scoreless until the third inning when Zach Miller scored on a Bondurant single to put Post # 219 on the board. But Hannibal struck back in the bottom half, scoring two runs to make the score 4-1 after three innings.
In the fourth inning, the Memphis bats came alive after Zach Miller hit a RBI double followed up by Sabe Sears smashing a two-run double into deep center field. In Hannibalís half of the fifth inning, they scored their fifth and final run of the contest. From that point on, Jordan Wheeler pitched lights out for Memphis.
Memphis took the lead in the sixth behind back-to-back RBI doubles from Ben Shannan and Drew Miller. In the seventh inning, Harley Stone drove in Sears and then Shannan drove in Bondurant to put Memphis up 9-5, which would be the final score.
Jordan Wheeler started and finished the game for Post #219, acquiring a complete game win. Wheeler struck out 9 batters while giving up 5 runs on 2 hits, 4 walks, and 3 hit batsmen. Ben Shannan once again drove in 3 runs, bringing his overall nightly total to 5-10 with a double, 6 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Zach Miller went 2-3 with a double, RBI, and 2 runs scored in the second contest.
Post #219 is now 2-0 on the year.
The Memphis team also defeated a Kirksville team in a scrimmage earlier last week 6-2.
