Midgets Manhandle SCR-I 60-27 in Conference Clash
A perfect 2-0 start to its Tri-Rivers Conference season came to a screeching halt on Friday night in Unionville when Scotland County ran into what looks to be one of state-ranked Schuyler Countyís biggest challengers for the 2010 conference crown.
The Tigers were able to hang around in the first period courtesy of six points from point guard Drew Miller. But a 14-8 deficit after eight minutes turned into a 31-13 cushion at the break for the home team.
The Midgets outscored SCR-I 17-5 in the second period as the Tigers were unable to get any offense going from the perimeter. The Tigers failed to make a three-point shot in the contest.
Putnam Countyís Daniel Mallette scored 10 points in the third period to fuel a 22-10 run that put the game away for the Midgets. Andrew Mathes had a pair of field goals for the Tigers to help them put up the highest scoring total of the game in the third period.
But it wasnít enough to keep Putnam County from pushing the lead to 30 points and ensure a running clock over the final eight minutes en route to the 60-27 victory.
Mallette finished with 23 points to lead all scorers. Nathan Wood added 10 points for the Midgets.
Scotland County was led in scoring by Mathes and Miller who each finished with six points. SCR-Iís leading scorers, Kasey Dial, Kyle Shelley and Brandon Garnett, were held to a combined seven points in the contest in a dominating defensive performance by Putnam County.
