ALVA FRANKLIN GARRETT

Alva Franklin Garrett, 93 of Memphis, Missouri passed away at his home on Friday, July 16, 2010.
The son of Peter Gordon and Eva Myrtle (Saulsbury) Garrett, he was born on September 24, 1916 in rural Downing, Missouri. On October 8, 1941, he was united in marriage to Mary Frances Watson and to this union five children were born, Larry, Berneice, Patricia, Rodger and Mary Ann. Then in May 1973, he was united in marriage to Cora Elizabeth Hawkins.
Alva is survived by his children, Larry Eugene Garrett of Taylor Ridge, Illinois, Berneice Hane and husband Fred of Trego, Montana, Patricia Hinkle and husband, Stan of Ewing, Missouri and Mary Ann Albright of Queen City, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one sister, Wilma June Nussbaum of Kirksville, Missouri; one daughter-in-law, Margaret (Marty) Garrett of Columbia, Missouri; one step daughter, Judy Hawkins of Bloomfield, Iowa; nieces; nephews and other family members.
Alva is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Frances on June 17, 1964; one son, Rodger Alan Garrett on November 6, 1987; three brothers, Charley Elson Garrett, Earnest Freman Garrett and Leo Gordon Garrett; three sisters, Annie Marie Shepherd, Silva Irene Blaise and Mary Ellen Dobson; his second wife, Cora Elizabeth Hawkins on March 16, 2007 and one stepson, Jimmie Hawkins.
Alva was a grain and livestock farmer southeast of Downing, Missouri for many years and also worked in the Ammunition Plant in Burlington, Iowa for approximately ten years.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri with Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith officiating. Music was special CD selections of “When I Get Where I’m Going”, “I Can Only Imagine” and “The Best Is Yet To Come”. Pallbearers were Danny Garrett, Curtis Boyer, Austin Garrett, Jamie Garrett, Nathan Albright, and Fred Hane III. Honorary pallbearers were Jonathan Nelson, Shawn Hane and Michael Garrett. Memorials have been established for the Campground Cemetery. Burial was in the Campground Cemetery, east of Downing, Missouri.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing and Lancaster, Missouri.
