Rams Rally Late to Retake Rock Traveling Trophy
Timing is everything. The stage was set Friday night for the conference season finale between neighbors that also had the Rock traveling trophy adding fuel to the rivalry.
Unfortunately for Scotland County the flu bug arrived on campus prior to the big night of basketball. The Tigers were without starter Travis Trueblood while many of the others that took the court were under the weather.
That didnít show early on. SCR-I took the court by storm in Queen City, opening a 12-5 lead in the gameís first eight minutes. Joe Spurgeon took advantage of a rare start, pouring in six early points as the Tigers took the lead.
SCR-I continued to pour in on the Rams. Cody Musgrove was unstoppable in the second period, scoring 12 of the Tigers 18 points as Scotland County extended its lead to 30-19.
But Schuyler County came out of the locker room on a mission. The Rams rally started with a three pointer by Jesse Wheeler. The Ramsí guard was injured in the opening minutes of the teamsí early-season meeting. He made the most of the second half on Friday night, scoring 11 points down the stretch.
Schuyler County outscored SCR-I 19-11 in the third period to pull to within 41-38 heading into the final period.
Schuyler County completed the rally in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 23-16 when it mattered most. The Rams made nine of 11 free throws in the clutch to secure the 61-57 victory and basically lock up second place in the league.
Musgrove led all scorers with 22 points for Scotland County, which fell to 8-14 on the year and finished 2-5 in conference play. Spurgeon finished with 13 points and Kyle Shelley added seven.
Greg Buckallew, Jacob Shively and Alex Gorman all had 12 points to pace the Rams. Wheeler finished with 11. Schuyler County completed an impressive run in the league, following up upset wins over Putnam County and Knox County with the victory over SCR-I to move up the standings and to secure the Jason Rockhold Memorial traveling trophy that goes to the winner of the rivalry game each season.
