WALTER LEO PFLANZ
Walter Leo Pflanz was born in Memphis, MO, June 4, 1911, and passed away June 21, 2008 at age 97.
On June 16, 1935 he married LeVaughn Mustoe. Within less than a year they came to Woodland, CA.
He became affiliated with Epperson’s Garage where he worked until World War II. He volunteered for active duty and was placed in the Air Transportation Command, where he served almost four years. At the close of the war he returned to Epperson’s where he became vice president of the company when Mr. Epperson retired. Forty years of his life was with this company.
Walter was active in community affairs, having received a framed certification from the city of Woodland, CA in appreciation for volunteer service to Woodland Multipurpose Center. He enjoyed working with the Gleaners. Another certificate came from the Community Care Car, where he served as a driver for 21 years. The youth hockey team honored him with yet another certificate for serving as ‘Pancake Chef” for them.
In 1947 he was initiated into Woodland Masonic Lodge. He became Master of the Lodge in 1963. In 1954 he served as High Priest of Royal Arch Masons of Woodland, and was Eminent Commander of Woodland’s Commandry in 1949. He was a Worthy Patron of Eastern Star in 1957. He was also a member of Ben Ali Shrine, and the Yolo County Shrine Club.
Walter was a member of the United Methodist Church. Through the years he participated in church activities, being a leader when the Sunday School building was built. He was Past President of United Methodist Men.
Walter was an avid hunter, and was never happier than when spending time in their mountain home, which they built.
Walter is survived by his wife of 73 years, one sister-in-law, one nephew and two nieces.
His parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
A public Masonic graveside service was held at Woodland Cemetery, June 26, 2008. A memorial service was held at the United Methodist Church, Woodland, CA. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, 212 Second St., Woodland, CA or Shriners Children’s Hospital, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817, or to the donor’s choice. McNary’s Chapel of Woodland, CA, assisted the family with arrangements.
