WESLEY D. LAY

Wesley D. Lay, 88 of Memphis, MO, passed away Monday morning May 5, 2008, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital, Memphis, MO. Wesley was born June 2, 1919, in Silver City, IA, the son of Melvin and Nina Scott Lay.
He grew up west of Greentop, MO, and attended school in Schuyler County, MO. Wesley then moved to Scotland County, MO, in March 1941, and entered the service on June 6, 1942, serving in World War II until December 15, 1945 in the 81st Inf. in South Pacific.
He married Elaine Wilson, February 14, 1944 in Queen City, MO. Wesley and Elaine farmed in Scotland County, northwest of Memphis until December 1979, when they sold the farm and moved into Memphis to retire. He did some carpenter work for nine years. In 1995 he worked at the Memphis Recreation Center part time. In his early years he loved to hunt and always had a dog.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He served on several boards including those of the Scotland County Senior Center, Scotland County A.S.C. Committee, and Memphis Housing Authority.
Wesley was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers; Clyde, Wayne, and Paul.
He is survived by his wife Elaine, of Memphis, MO, one brother Forest M. Lay, of Pomeroy, IA, several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews and special friends Mike, Randi and Ryan Slaughter.
The family has suggested memorials to the First Presbyterian Church, and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
Funeral Services were held May 7, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Charles McCracken officiating. Pallbearers were Mike Slaughter, Brian Briggs, Steve Caldwell, George Koontz, Roy Monroe and Frank Reed. Interment was in the Ft. Madison Cemetery, Adair County MO.
Arrangements were handled by Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
