Brashear Blasts SCR-I 58-41 in Tourney Semis
Brashear knew it wouldn’t have to face Tri-Rivers Conference MVP Cody Musgrove for the first 16 minutes of Thursday night’s Novinger Tournament semifinals. The #2 seed took advantage of his absence, jumping out to a 37-18 advantage while Musgrove could only sit and watch as he completed a game and a half suspension to open the season.
SCR-I fell behind 15-6 in the opening eight minutes as turnovers stalled the offense.
Travis Trueblood made seven of eight free throws in the second period but the Tigers had no answer for Brashear on defense. The other Tigers poured in 22 points in the quarter to lead by 19 at the intermission.
Musgrove was chomping at the bit to get into action, and it showed when he finally hit the floor in the third period. The senior appeared to be wearing a referee’s target on his back, as he was immediately saddled with foul trouble and didn’t make it through the fourth period before picking up number five.
He scored six of Scotland County’s 10 points in the period as Scotland County was able to trim the Brashear lead by just one point.
Trueblood hit a three pointer to spark a fourth period run but Brashear never was really threatened, holding on for the 58-41 victory to advance to the tourney championship game.
SCR-I was forced to settle for a third place game.
Trueblood finished with 17 points to lead all scorers. Musgrove and Jacob Howard each had six points.
