Tigers Claim First Conference Basketball Title Since 1999
Friday night was both a first and a last for three players on the Scotland County boysí basketball team. The February 16th contest was senior night, the final scheduled home game for the trio of upperclassmen.
Bryce Blomme, Matt Wickert and Grant Blomme enjoyed their last home game by accomplishing a first in their careers, a conference championship.
The seniors combined for 48 points as SCR-I bested Schuyler County 67-60 in front of a packed crowd at Memphis that didnít even know at the time that thhe had witnessed the conference championship game. SCR-I improved to a perfect 6-0 in league play with one game remaining. Putnam County remains the lone team with just a single loss.
Grant Blomme set the tone early for Scotland County. He had eight points early in the first period to push the Tigers out to a 16-8 advantage.
Wickert closed out the first quarter in style as he hit a runner from just across half court as time expired. The three pointer made the score 23-14.
Cody Musgrove shouldered the scoring load in the second period as the offense slowed down for the Tigers. The junior had eight points in the period to help SCR-I hold a 36-29 advantage at the break.
Bryce Blomme opened the second half with a score before Schuyler County went on an 8-1 run to get to within 39-37.
Wickert answered with a basket in the paint and Bryce Blomme followed with a three pointer to give the Tigers some breathing room.
Kyle Shelley converted a three-point play late in the third period but it was not enough to stave off a Schuyler County run that brought the Rams to within 48-46.
Jacob Winkler was the key to the Schuyler County run as he scored 13 points in the third period.
He continued his hot shooting in the fourth period as Schuyler County remained within striking distance despite a pair of buckets from both Musgrove and Wickert.
Bryce Blomme took over in the final three minutes of the contest. He hit a clutch three pointer with 2:49 left to play to make it 58-54.
He followed that up with a basket in the paint and then hit seven-of-eight from the free throw line in the final minutes to secure the 67-60 victory.
Wickert and Bryce Blomme each finished with 19 points to pace Scotland County (13-8, 6-0 TRC). Musgrove added 16 points and Grant Blomme had 10 points. Winkler led all scorers with 35 points for Schuyler County.
The victory insured SCR-I at minimum a tie for its first Tri-Rivers Conference Championship since 1999. The Tigers will close out league play February 22 against Brookfield in a game that was rescheduled from February 13th due to inclement weather. A victory would give the Tigers the title outright and would cap off a perfect conference season. This game will replace the originally scheduled game against LaPlata, as both the Tigers and the Bulldogs try to wrap up the regular season before district play opens that weekend.
