VERA FLORENCE SMITH

Vera Florence Smith, 87, of Memphis, MO, formerly of Downing, MO, died on December 13, 2007, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO.
She was born near Downing, MO, on March 22, 1920 to Zene Ellsworth and Hila Lasley Lewis.
She was married to Otho Loral Stice on August 3, 1935 in Lancaster, MO. They later divorced. She married Clifton Cleave Smith on November 12, 1946 in Edina, MO. He preceded her in death on November 29, 2003.
She had lived in Downing, MO most of her life until 1964 when she moved with Clifton as his job with the railroad took him to Ashland, NE, Aurora, IL, and Ottumwa, IA, then moving back to the farm in Downing, MO, once he retired in September 1978. She was a member of the Downing Community Christian Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Schuyler Chapter, A 50-year member of the Downing Chit Chat Club and when able, was an avid genealogist. She loved to travel and was willing to go with anyone at the drop of a hat. She had visited most of the 50 states and several foreign countries.
Surviving are five sons, Loral Stice and wife, Barbara of Plato, MO, Robert Stice and wife, Arlene of Downing, MO, James Stice and wife, Judy of Lapine, AL, Vernon Stice and wife, Leona of Carl Junction, MO, Larry Smith and wife, Raenelle of Downing, MO, and one daughter, Judy Agee and husband, Arlo of Ottumwa, IA; 18 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ruby Lewis; nephew, William Lewis and niece, Diana Dawson.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton; two great-grandsons, Dakota Swedberg and Ken Maddox; two brothers, Estelle and Henry Lewis.
Funeral services were held on December 17, 2007, at the Norman Funeral Home in Downing, MO with Dan Hite, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Memphis, MO officiating. Music was provided by organist, Willa Gooden and soloist, Schelle Cooley. Pallbearers were Edward Stice, Mickey Stice, Tony Stice, Tom Smith, Cliff Agee, and Scott Stice. Memorials have been established for the Schuyler Chapter DAR. Burial was in the Downing Cemetery in Downing, MO. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing, MO.
