Frederick Leads Lady Tigers To Title Game
The Scotland County Lady Tigers got some of their biggest shots from their smallest player on January 18th as SCR-I outlasted Schuyler County 68-64 to advance to the championship game of the North Shelby Tourney.
Just weeks after suffering a hip injury that kept her out of the lineup for several games, Ashlee Frederick poured in a career-high 22 points to lead her team to the win over the Lady Rams. The senior point guard did it all in the game’s final minute to insure her team would win.
With just 45 seconds left in the game, Frederick erased a two-point deficit by drilling a three pointer. She then came up with a huge play on the other end of the court, blocking a shot to get her team a stop that allowed the Lady Tigers to pull ahead by two points. Frederick then sealed the win by calmly sinking two free throws with just five ticks on the clock.
SCR –I jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the contest and rode a balanced scoring attack to a 32-27 halftime advantage. Frederick had nine points in the first half while Ali Fromm added eight and Angie Bulen had seven.
“They were playing a box-and-one defense on Ali, so that left Ashlee with some good looks at the basket,” said Coach Kelli Swearingen. “I looked at her during a timeout and she shrugged her shoulders and said ‘hey they’re leaving me open so I’ll take it.’”
The Rams refused to go away. Despite six straight points from Angie Bulen, Schuyler County still trailed by just two points. That was before a three-point play by Frederick regained the momentum for the Lady Tigers.
But the lead never was larger than six points and a late three pointer by Schuyler County actually cut the deficit to just three points heading into the fourth period.
Baskets by Jamie Fuller and Jessica Bair extended the lead to 55-49 before Schuyler went on a 6-0 run to tie the game.
Tahnee Poe gave Schuyler County its first lead of the night when she hit back-to-back three pointers to put the Rams on top 62-59.
Frederick cut the deficit to one-point with a jumper from the corner before Bulen tied the contest at 62-62 with a free throw.
Schuyler went back on top before SCR-I reclaimed the lead for good on Frederick’s three pointer.
Frederick led the solid team performance with 22 points. Bulen hit for 17 points while Fromm had 15 points. Scotland County improved to 9-6 on the year. Schuyler County (4-8) was led by Poe with 17 points and Jackie Roberts with 15 points.
