Fog Blamed For Crash Injuring Downing Residents
Fog was blamed for a one-vehicle accident early on the morning of December 22nd that left four Downing residents injured.
The crash occurred at 2:15 a.m. at the intersection of Route BB and Highway 15, four miles north of Memphis.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jennifer N. Smith, 21, was westbound on Route BB in a 2003 Ford pickup when she failed to see the stop sign due to the fog. The truck crossed Highway 15 and traveled off the road down a steep embankment before crashing into a ditch.
A passing motorist found the victims and contacted the ambulance service.
Smith sustained moderate injuries as did her husband, 23-year-old Richard S. Smith. Two other passengers in the truck were also injured. Chris L. Snodgrass, 27, sustained moderate injuries. He and the Smiths were transported by Scotland County Ambulance to Scotland County Memorial Hospital. A third passenger in the truck, Jacki E. Whicker, 20, sustained minor injuries and was transported by private vehicle to SCMH.
Jennifer Smith was issued a summons for operating a motor vehicle without a valid license and failure to wear a seatbelt. Whicker was the lone occupant in the truck wearing a seatbelt.
The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the ambulance service, the Scotland County Fire and Rescue and the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department.
