Holiday Crowds Set New Record at Theatre
Big lines are nothing new for the Thanksgiving weekend, which is the traditional start for the holiday shopping season. But the Memphis Theatre hadn’t offered any special sales nor was it giving away any promotional deals.
That didn’t stop a record crowd from attending the three-day weekend showings of Santa Claus 3: The Escape Clause.
Organizer Dr. Harlo Donelson stated that the local cinema broke an attendance record on the premier showing of the film on Friday evening when a total of 245 viewers were seated.
“We had a family of nine that had come all the way from Keokuk, IA, and were not going to be able to stay for the second showing so we set up some extra seats for them upstairs,” said Donelson.
The theatre had similar capacity crowds for the regularly scheduled Saturday and Sunday evening shows as well, forcing the volunteers to work overtime with second showings on all three nights.
The big weekend kicks off a busy holiday season for the theatre. The cinema will host the traditional Christmas matinee shows on Saturday beginning December 2nd. Show time is 1:30 p.m. and admission is a donation of non-perishable food item(s) for the local food pantry. Doogal, Snow Day and Over the Hedge are the three films scheduled for the matinee shows.
