SCR-I Brings Home Third From Knox County Tourney
One bad inning proved to be the difference for the Scotland County softball team which had to settle for a third place finish in the Knox County Tournament held September 3rd in Edina.
An 8:00 a.m. start time didnít keep SCR-I from making quick work of the host team in the tourney opener. The Lady Tigers dispatched Knox County 15-0 in just four innings.
The Lady Tigers put up 11 runs in the first inning and never looked back. Kirsten Johnston and Kellyn Wickert each had a pair of hits in the opening frame and accounted for four of the 11 tallies.
Johnston went 3-4 on the game with three runs scored. Jessica Bair and Andrea Shelley both were a perfect 3-3 at the plate.
Karra Small picked up the victory with four innings of shutout work. She gave up just three hits and a walk while fanning four.
Game two saw Marion County jump out to a 2-0 lead.
SCR-I cut into the deficit in the fourth inning. Bair, Lacey Jack and Angie Bulen each had base hits to load the bases. Bair scored on a throwing error by the catcher to make the score 2-1.
But Marion County exploded for four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the wind out of the Lady Tigers sails on a very hot afternoon.
Small ended up allowing seven runs on 12 hits but did strike out seven.
The Lady Tigers tallied a run in the fifth inning after Johnston tripled. She scored on a base knock by Wickert.
Marion County came right back in the bottom of the inning to erase the run and make the final score 7-2.
That sent the Lady Tigers into the third place game where they faced Canton. SCR-I rallied from a 3-1 deficit, exploding for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the 6-3 victory. Johnston led the way with three hits including a key double that sparked the rally. Small was the winning pitcher, going the distance for the Lady Tigers.
The victory improves SCR-I to 4-3 on the season. Highland beat Marion County 4-1 to claim the tourney title.
