Tigers Take Second Place At Kirksville Academic Challenge
The Scotland County Campus Bowl team brought home second place from the Kirksville R-III Academic Challenge held February 26.
The Tigers opened the event with a 355-120 victory over Schuyler County. Julie Triplett and Lance Smith each answered eight toss-up questions to lead the scoring.
Round two was another lopsided match as SCR-I easily dispatched Chillicothe by a final score of 345-50. Triplett led all scorers, answering 12 questions while Smith finished with six correct answers. Loren Billington answered three toss-up questions.
The Tigers finished the opening round on a down note as the host Kirksville squad defeated the Tigers 490-205.
SCR-I earned a second seed in the final bracket courtesy of their 2-1 mark. That set up a pair of rematches.
The Tigers faced off with Schuyler County in the semi-finals match-up. Once again Scotland County prevailed by a final score of 240-120. Triplett topped the scoring with five toss-up questions. Smith and Michelle Lodewegen each answered four.
Scotland County advanced to the title tilt against Kirksville. The Tigers opened strong, taking a 70-60 lead after the first period. But Kirksville rebounded in the bonus round to build a 235-140 bulge at the intermission. Kirksville rolled on to the 465-220 victory to win the championship.
SCR-I was well represented on the All-Bowl team as two Tigers finished among the top four scorers in the event. Triplett was the second leading scorer while Smith had the fourth highest individual scoring average.
