Tigers Close Out 2004 With 81-59 Loss To Canton
The Scotland County Tigers closed out 2004 with an 81-59 loss to Canton on December 30 in Memphis to fall to 1-7 on the year.
After Matt Wickert opened the game with a three pointer, Canton went on an 11-0 run to build a commanding lead. The Tigers trimmed away at the deficit and after two free throws by Greg Neagle, SCR-I trailed 18-10.
Canton blew the game open at the start of the second quarter. The guests scored the first 15 points of the period before Wickert hit a free throw to make the score 33-11 with 4:49 left in the first half.
Wickert hit a three pointer before Grant Blomme nailed back-to-back shots from behind the arc. But the Tigers couldn’t cut into the 20-point bulge as Canton went to the intermission on top 45-23.
Scotland County made things interesting for the fans in the third quarter as the three pointers began to fall. After Wickert opened the period with a driving score it turned into the Jared Shelley Show. The senior guard scored the next 10 points for the Tigers including a pair of three pointers. Neagle got into the act, hitting from behind the arc to make the score 60-42. The Blomme twins each hit three pointers to bring SCR-I to within 12 points at 60-48.
That was as close as the Tigers would come. The rally ran out of gas as the fourth quarter began. Canton closed out the game on a 21-11 run to make the final score 81-59.
Shelley and Grant Blomme each had 15 points to pace the Tigers. Neagle finished with 11 points and Wickert added nine in the losing effort. Canton (7-1) was led by Jordan Ayers and Adam Potts. Both players scored 19 points.
The Tigers are seeded seventh in the upcoming Highland Tourney and will take on #2 ranked Clark County on January 4.
In the junior varsity game it was Canton posting a 52-18 victory. Cody Musgrove led the Tigers with seven points before sitting out the second half. Brandon Dale added five points.
