Jessie M. Onken, 89, of Memphis, MO, died March 20, 2005, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO, where she had resided since 1994.
She was born July 6, 1915, in Scotland County, MO, to Phillip A. and Alva L. Tippett Purvis.
She attended country school in Scotland County, MO.
She married Ira W. Onken on September 20, 1939, at St. Charles, MO. He died November 9, 1991.
Jessie was a housewife, a member of the Memphis Presbyterian Church and was active in the Presbyterian Women’s Circle as long as she was able and continued to contribute after she set up residence in the nursing home. She enjoyed the company of people and expressed this fondness by handing out mints to everyone and soon came to acknowledge the other residents in the Care Center as her extended family. She took an active interest in her nieces and nephews, keeping in close touch by phone. She exhibited a special love for little children and was quite fond of animals, having had several pets.
She is survived by one brother, William R. Purvis and his wife, Verna of Memphis, MO; a sister, Bette Hergenreader of Evanston, WY; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Mabel Purvis and Mary Rossi; and seven brothers, Joe Purvis, Elmer Purvis, Carl Purvis, Charley Purvis, Wayne Purvis, Herbert Purvis, and Hugh Franklin Purvis, who died in infancy.
Funeral services were held March 24, 2005, at the Presbyterian Church in Memphis, MO with the Reverend Charles McCracken officiating. Organist was Vera Monroe, accompanying Angela Westhoff, soloist. Burial followed in the Memphis Cemetery. Casket bearers were Larry Purvis, Richard Purvis, Raymond Eyler, Chris Purvis, Lonnie Vance and Tony Watson. Honorary casket bearers were Lynn Purvis, Roy Watson, Raymond Hayden, and Mark Hayden. Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church or to the Scotland County Care Center. Memphis Funeral Home, Memphis, MO, was in charge of arrangements.
