Bench Helps Lady Tigers Get By Schuyler County
The Scotland County Lady Tigers got key contributions off the bench to help keep the team's hopes of a second place finish in the conference alive with a 39-34 win over Schuyler County February 15.
SCR-I got key minutes from Jennifer Crawford, Valerie Crawford, Brandi Mallett and Katie Kittle on a night the starting five was having trouble finding the groove.
Coach Andrea Dabney sent the message early as her squad came out of the gates slowing, scoring just eight points in the first period.
Amy Blomme hit a jumper to start the contest and Jessie Cotton hit a three pointer before the offense went south for the remainder of the period.
Meagan Fromm finally broke through the box-and-one defense that was hounding her all evening to get a bucket on an offensive rebound. A free throw from Jennifer Crawford gave SCR-I an 8-7 lead after one quarter.
Things went a bit better in the second period. Fromm started the quarter with a pair of free throws. Sara Norton got into the score book with a couple baskets in the paint.
But the Schuyler County press defense then took over and forced several SCR-I turnovers. Fortunately the Rams were unable to capitalize on the mistakes and after a Kittle free throw Scotland County still led 15-7.
Cotton hit another three pointer to make the margin 18-12. But the sophomore guard was forced to the bench shortly after with her third personal foul. That helped Schuyler County get back into the game.
Mallett just beat the buzzer with a putback off an offensive rebound to help SCR-I maintain a 20-17 lead at intermission.
SCR-I fell behind 22-20 early in the third period before Fromm scored on another offensive rebound. Valerie Crawford followed that up with a score before Schuyler County went on a run to pull ahead 32-26 to end the third period.
The second string turned the game around in the fourth period as the Lady Tigers had just two starters on the court during the key stretch. Fromm swung the momentum back to her team with a three pointer. Jennifer Crawford got a couple key rebounds before hitting one of two from the charity stripe to pull SCR-I within two points.
Fromm tied the game at 32-32 with 6:03 left in the game. That's where the scored remained fof nearly four minutes before Kittle hit a huge three pointer to give Scotland County the lead.
The Lady Tigers got the ball back and used good passing to burn up more than a minute of precious time before Schuyler County finally stopped the clock with a foul. The strategy did not work as Cotton calmly sank two free throws to build a five point lead with under a minute left on the clock.
After a defensive stop SCR-I got the ball back and again spread the court. This time Cotton got the easy bucket underneath the basket after the team beat the Rams pressure defense to make the final score 39-34.
Cotton finished with 12 points to lead the Lady Tigers to victory. Fromm had 11 points on the night while Kittle and Norton each added four points.
