Scotland County had two teams advance to the finals of the 2002 S.P.R.I.N.T. Quiz Bowl Tournament held in Memphis January 12. Thirty-nine teams from across the Tri-state area competed in the event in both the junior high and elementary school divisions.
The Scotland County B Team of Lance Smith, Julie Triplett, Loren Billington and Hannah Kiddoo went undefeated during the morning session to win the Group D title and advance to the finals seeded second in the eight team field for the tournament finale.
The team knocked off North Shelby 290-220 in the first game of the day. Triplett scored 17 toss-ups and Smith added nine.
Game two was not as close as the Tigers dominated Highland 330-180 behind 150 points from Triplett and 130 points from Smith.
The Brashear B team was the next victim as SCR-I rolled to the 300-140 win. Smith had 130 points and Triplett added 110 while Billington and Kiddoo each had 30 points.
Triplett scored 200 points en route to a 380-90 demolition of Fox Valley in game four, securing the number two seed in the final bracket for SCR-I. Billington had his best game of the day with 70 points and Smith added 90.
The Tigers opened the final round with a 290-160 win over the Knox County A team to advance to the semi-finals. Smith had 120 points followed by Triplett with 110 and Billington with 50.
The team was one question away from advancing to the championship when Putnam County broke a tie on the final question of the game to escape with a 230-220 victory that dropped Scotland County into the third place game.
The Tigers dropped another close game as the Kirksville A team came on strong late to erase a deficit and take the 260-210 win.
The Scotland County A team, consisting of Kaleb Reese, Lauren Grogan, Jayson Brush, Brittney Courtright, and Michelle Lodewegen, also made it to the finals but had a much more difficult road to advance.
The Tigers took the lead with just two questions remaining and beat the Kirksville B team 250-240 in the opening game. Lodewegen had 150 points and Courtright added 70 points in the win.
Game two was basically a re-run featuring a different opponent as the Tigers scored with just two questions remaining to beat Marion County 220-210. Lodewegen had 100 points and Brush added 80 points. Courtright and Reese each had 20 points.
Knox County B team gave the Tigers their first blemish on their record with a 290-180 defeat. Despite the defeat the Tigers still moved on to the final round as the eighth seeded team.
The squad was knocked out of the tournament with a 310-100 loss to eventual tourney champion, Knox County A team.
