Tigers Stop Top Guns, Still Can't Get By Highland
Going into the December 1 contest against Highland, Scotland County coach Marc Colvin knew he had to try to limit Highland's two top guns, Marcus Dilligard and Jerril Humphrey for the Tigers to have a chance at the upset.
While the Tigers did the job defensively, it was the offensive end that did the team in as SCR-I managed just 36 points in the 55-36 loss to the Cougars. The defense held the duo of Humphrey and Dilligard to just 17 points combined, well below their season averages.
Highland came out strong to build a 16-4 advantage. Colvin said the hot start for Highland kept the team from trying to slow the tempo down as the Tigers were trailing from the get go.
Highland maintained the double-digit advantage the rest of the first half before blowing the game open in the third period with a 17-7 run to put the contest out of reach for SCR-I.
Aarron Holt led the Scotland County offense with 14 points. Kirk Stott finished with 10 points. The Tigers got just three points from its post players in the game.
SCR-I fell to 0-3 on the season with the loss. The Tigers will try to break into the win column December 6 in Memphis against a talented LaPlata squad that played well in the 1A state playoffs last season.
