SCR-I District Tax Levy Lowered To $3.0083
Not only does the Scotland County R-I School District have the fourth lowest tax levy among the 66-similar sized districts in the state, but now the district has an even lower levy rate following the August 31 SCR-I School Board meeting.
Following the annual tax levy rate hearing prior to the board of education meeting, the board voted 6-0 to set the 2001-2002 levy rate at $3.0083 per $100 of assessed valuation. That is a reduction of more than five cents from the last year's rate of $3.06.
The levy reduction coincides with an increase in the district's assessed valuation as reported by the state. The district also has less control over the rate than many area district's that have a Proposition C waiver, allowing the boards of education of each school to waive a portion or all of the state Prop C rollback. SCR-I does not have such a waiver, which must be approved by a public vote.
The $3.0083 tax rate compares favorably, for taxpayers, with the other districts in northeast Missouri.
The Tri-Rivers Conference Schools tax levy rates are:
· North Shelby $3.79
· Knox County $3.68
· Putnam County $3.64
· Schuyler County $3.52
· Clark County $3.50
· Brookfield $3.3994
· SCR-I $3.0083
· Milan $2.87
Other levy rates of interest in this region include Revere $4.75, Wyaconda $4.71, Gorin $4.1483, Luray $4.25, and Kirksville $4.05.
Of the 66 similar-sized districts in Missouri, Mendon has the highest levy rate at $5.32. The three districts below SCR-I are Milan, Macon County $2.9595 and Middle Grove $2.75.
